The Green Certificate Program provides trainees with opportunities to enter a variety of agriculture-related, structured learning pathways as a part of their senior high school program and to earn a credential leading to a career in agribusiness. Driven by industry, this program uses an apprenticeship style of delivery to ensure that participants learn through actively performing the skills required. This means going out into the barn, field or corrals with a trainer who is knowledgeable and vested in the trainee’s success.
Students learn on the job, under the direction of experienced farm personnel and under the supervision and administration of Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development (AARD) and Alberta Education. Students completing all three courses in a specialization, to the standards specified, would earn the technician level Green Certificate for that specialization, which is issued by AARD.
The Green Certificate Program is also delivered in Saskatchewn through the Ministry of Agriculture and Food's Livestock Development Branch to provide practical, hands-on training curriculum for agriculture in Saskatchewan. Trainees can acquire skills in one of several agricultural sectors, including feedlot, cow/calf, dairy, sheep, crop, irrigated crop production, and aerial application. Three levels of training are available in each area covering skills for technicians, production supervisors, and managers/owners. Program training starts at the Technician Level and, where desired, progresses to Supervisor and on to Business Manager.
