Occupational Standards and Learning Tools for the Ornamental Sector

Working with the Canadian Nursery Landscape Association, and building on the Association's National Occupational Standards for Certified Horticultural Technicians, the Canadian Agricultural Human Resource Council developed occupational standards and learning tools for the ornamental sector to enhance the image and skills of ornamental sector workers and enable their movement across Canada. Specifically, this project helped to: increase and standardize the professional status of ornamental workers; provide a way for employers in this industry to recognize new and existing skill sets; and improve the industry’s ability to deliver appropriate learning tools directly in the workplace.

Three key publications resulted from this project:

On-the-job training (OJT) materials for employers in the ornamental sector were also developed as a result of this project. Designed to help employers train new workers on the job in a consistent and effective way, the training materials include the Landscape Horticulturist OJT Reference Guide which contains two booklets, Install and Maintain Hardscape and Install and Maintain Softscape, as well as four Job Instruction cards. They retail for $100 in hard-bound binder format, $30 in unbound colour-copy format, and $20 in CD format.*excluding applicable taxes. Order your copy today!

The Council will use the results of this project and its tools to build future occupational standards and learning tools in the agriculture sector.
