Agriculture sets Site on Future Talent

Database of agriculture training programs launched

June 10, 2009

ST. JOHN’S – On the occasion of its Annual General Meeting, the Canadian Agricultural Human Resource Council (CAHRC) today launched AgriTalent.ca—an easy-to-use online database linking Canadians to institutions and training providers that offer programs in agriculture.

“This is an exciting time to get into and to prosper in agriculture,” said Terry Murray, Chair of CAHRC’s Board of Directors. “There is an immediate need for people with specialized training and skills, and the possibilities are endless. AgriTalent.ca will help Canadians discover those possibilities and get the education they need to start, or grow within a rewarding career.”

Canadian agriculture is facing a growing shortage of skilled workers. Over the next five years, an estimated 50,000 positions will need to be filled. These include supervisory and technical specialists, machinery operators and mechanics as well as general farm workers.

“AgriTalent.ca reveals a lot about the opportunities agriculture presents as a career choice,” added Danielle Vinette, CAHRC’s Executive Director. “Thanks to the Internet, this tool shows Canadians and the world the wealth of agriculture training programs offered by Canadian institutions and training providers.”

AgriTalent.ca contains up-to-date information on more than 1,000 programs and courses that are offered by training institutions across Canada. Listings range from full-time degree and diploma programs to accreditation and continuing education courses. AgriTalent.ca is an essential resource for youth planning a career in agriculture, persons currently employed in the sector who want to advance their career, and employers who want to expand the skill sets of their workforce.

The AgriTalent.ca database was launched before agriculture and education leaders on the eve of CAHRC’s Annual General Meeting, which is taking place this week in St. John’s. Led by industry and funded through the Government of Canada’s Sector Council Program, the Council was set up to address the human resource issues facing Canada’s agriculture sector.
