The agriculture sector has developed more rapidly in the 20th century than in all previous history. To survive and thrive in today’s competitive information economy, agriculture producers, farm managers and other workers in the agriculture sector must keep up-to-date on innovations and new technologies being used in their jobs.
They not only need to be skilled in the use of farm equipment, but also in the use of computers and other technology, marketing, human and financial resources management and production – all of which may require training today – and on-going training in the future. A number of programs currently exist across Canada, but many may not be well known.
The Canadian Agricultural Human Resource Council (CAHRC) worked to change this situation. In June 2009, the CAHRC launched agritalent.ca – the first national on-line database of agriculture training programs. Agritalent.ca links people to Canadian institutions that offer training in agriculture. Visitors to the web site may search by training subject, commodity group, institution or keyword in English and in French. The database contains more than 1,000 programs and courses, provided by more than 200 institutions and training providers and contains contact information, as well as the number of programs offered at any one institution.
