Canada’s agricultural production is constantly evolving and, in recent years, farming trends are showing an increase in specialized production in all commodities. To take advantage of new market opportunities in these areas, farm operators recognize that they need specialized skills and knowledge to successfully tap into global markets. In particular, they realize that exporting farm commodities requires specific knowledge and understanding of the regulations and requirements of the exporting country as well as those of the country of destination. While there is considerable information available for farmers exporting key commodities, this may not be the case for less traditional or niche products—nor is this information readily accessible to, or tailored to meet the needs of, primary producers.
The Canadian Agricultural Human Resource Council is partnering with the Forum for International Trade Training to adapt the Forum's Going Global resources for agriculture entrepreneurs who want to enter global markets. These customized resources will help entrepreneurs understand how to develop an international business plan and how to identify and overcome the challenges involved in international trade. They will provide hands-on knowledge and skills to entrepreneurs that are current and can be applied immediately.
The Agriculture Going Global project will equip farmers of export-ready commodities with the learning materials they need to market products internationally. These materials will be produced in both official languages and delivered through partnerships with key organizations.
The Council will use the results of this project to initiate a network to connect entrepreneurs interested in entering international markets with experts and contacts who can facilitate access to current information on select export-ready commodities.
